Queensland collapse but hold upper hand

Queensland were in big trouble at 6 for 20 in their second innings but importantly held an overall lead of 150 over Tasmania on the second day of an eventful match at the Gabba. On a day when 15 wickets fell for 121 runs despite rain halting play shortly after tea, the Bulls went to stumps with Ashley Noffke and Chris Hartley both at the crease on 3.

Ben Hilfenhaus and Brett Geeves had been a nightmare for the Queensland top order and they each collected three wickets from seven overs. Andrew Symonds struggled to have any impact with the bat in his first state match since being demoted from the national side and he was caught behind off Geeves for 5 to add to his 5 from the first innings.

But Symonds was not alone in failing to master the Gabba pitch; no Queensland batsman had yet reached double figures in the second innings. Things were just as difficult for Tasmania, who were knocked over for 106 after starting the day at 1 for 5.

Noffke, who was unlucky not to be on the Test tour of India, picked up 3 for 14 from 14 overs, the former South Australian Ryan Harris collected three wickets in his first game for Queensland, and Symonds helped subdue the tail with 3 for 17. George Bailey (27) was the only one of Tasmania's specialist batsmen who looked like building a decent total, while Geeves finished unbeaten on 31.

But Tasmania needed the sort of tail-end resistance that the Bulls had provided in the first innings. Queensland's No. 10 Chris Swan made 76 on the first day, an innings that could prove to be the difference in a game that could be over within three days.
