drummed to the square leg boundary! Took on the short ball that was rising over his head and pulled it away powerfully to seal Sri Lanka's first win on the tour
New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI at Hamilton, Jan 15 2015 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Sri Lanka won by 6 wickets (with 14 balls remaining)
So that wraps things up at Hamilton. The cricket caravan will more on to Auckland now on Saturday. So do join us then. Thank you for your company, and do keep an eye out for Andrew Fernando's match report
"Good surface for batting, came on nicely. Really enjoyed myself, it was my home ground in 2010 when I came here. Enjoying my bowling as well, got more than 20 wickets in the last six months. Didn't turn much, but I put the ball in the right areas and made the batsman make the play," says Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Man of the Match
"Four run-outs is not good enough," says Brendon McCullum. "Little bit of panic set in and something we've prided on not doing too much recently. We were threatening a 300 score, but not good enough. But we just have to learn from the mistakes. It was a 290-300 wicket, some of the bowlers bowled really well and they will be better for the experience. But against a player like Dilshan in that form, it can be daunting. Everyone knows it's tough on Henry and Neesham, but we can only have 15. But it's a good experience and with three weeks left, they might still be included in the World Cup. Frustrating that I was dismissed before the powerplay, and not being able to set up a good total"
"Pretty pleasing with the way the boys went about things," says Angelo Mathews. "They got off to a brilliant start, McCullum batted very well but our spinners pulled things back and the fielders made four run-outs. Clinical work. Pitch looked slow so we brought Herath in and it worked. We need to continue in the same manner, working very hard on the fielding. Brilliant innings from Dilshan, we want one of the top four to bat through the innings"
9.10 pm The players shake hands under the backdrop of a rosy sunset. There appeared to be only one result as soon as Tillakaratne Dilshan took control. His drives were sumptuous, his pulls blared authority and his hunt for singles was never-ending. Quite the template for an openers' innings during a chase. But his 19th ODI ton became match-winning because Sri Lanka's spinners and fielders had turned the tables on a rampaging New Zealand innings earlier. Stay with us for the presentation
Tom: "This shows exactly why Sri Lanka should play to their strengths. Herath is a world class spinner and should always be included in the team rather than a 3rd fast bowler who wouldn't be anywhere near the team if not for these "fast bowlers'" pitches"
sprawls down into the pitch on the followthrough after a third accurate short ball in a row. Thirimanne hops up and tucks it behind square leg
beautifully done again. Short ball right over middle stump forces Thirimanne to bend out of the way
bouncer again on middle and off, Thirimanne sways away
Brad: "The two things NZ would have wanted from this match are Milne to show he's better than Henry and runs from somebody other than McCullum. Oops."
fuller delivery on middle and leg, Mathews whips but finds mid-on
low full toss on off stump, tapped to short cover
goes short on leg stump and Mathews has helped it on its way to the fine leg boundary. Only two left to get now
fuller delivery on middle, Mathews turns it to midwicket
down the track and smears a good length ball through extra cover. Ranks among the best shots of the day
fuller delivery outside off, Mathews defends into the covers
Boult for a bit
shortish and outside off, whipped to long-on
back of a length on middle and leg, flicked to long leg
another bouncer to the new batsman and Thirimanne tucks his head under his armpit
he falls to the short ball after taking Sri Lanka so close! Lots of pace behind this from Henry after two slower balls on the trot and he finds Dilshan slow on the pull. Not often has that happened today, might have been tiring as well. Top edge lobs to the keeper and he walks off to a huge ovation. Top hundred, this
fuller and slower delivery on middle and leg, gets an inside edge towards short midwicket
Matt Henry comes back. But with 13 needed off 30, what can he do?
fuller delivery, slower too, as Mathews recognises it and clips through mdiwicket
Muhammad: "Dilshans scored a 54 vs Milne in 32 balls. Wooowww. he has scored 54 of the 61 runs that Milne has conceded"
good length on off stump at 143 kph, pushed to mid-off
they're just having fun out there now. Or Dilshan might be tiring as he slogs at a fuller delivery outside off and gets the outside half of the bat to mid-off
full on off stump and this was at 140kph, Dilshan planted his front foot in line with it and walloped it barely over the bowler's head. Time for them to run in with helmets?
that's the slower short ball, picked up and pummeled over the wide long-on boundary. Magnificent striking
wild slog this time off a length delivery, loses his shape completely as he misses it
the pace of New Zealand's bowlers has done little to deter Dilshan. He's spotted this 140+kph short ball early and pulls it way in front of square
