going, going gone! Mendis overpitches on middle and leg and he takes a few paces down and lofts him through the line over long-on, there are several green shirts on the field
Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Match at Dhaka, Jan 14 2009 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Bangladesh won by 5 wickets (with 43 balls remaining)
Bangladesh have claimed the bonus point and they have edged out Zimbabwe and will meet Sri Lanka again in the final on Friday. Shakib finishes unbeaten on 92 off 69 balls and his team-mates must be overawed. He certainly took my breath away with his confidence and audacity. Murali and Mendis were negated and attacked and that proved to be the turning point. It came to a stage when Jayawardene ran out of ideas but any captain would have been helpless in the end. It seemed impossible to set fields for Shakib, who regularly made room and improvised.
Mashfiq, our reader from India: "Wish I were there in the ground now to witness this innings. I guess, it's one of the best ODI innings that any Bangladeshi batsmen has ever played."
Golam, from Bangladesh: "Cheers to Shakib Al Hasan. He is the only consistent player in Bangladesh team. We expect good success for him."
Stay with us for the presentation.
Here's Jayawardene: "It was a bit difficult batting first, but there was no excuse for falling 25-30 short, but obviously credit to Shakib. The batsmen didn't take any responsibility, I don't think we can blame the bowlers much."
Ashraful: "We played professional cricket, all the guys bowled well and we fielded well. Shakib played a brilliant innings and I supported him. I hope we play well in the final."
Shakib: "Best innings in my career so far, I was middling it well. The plans worked well. I didn't target anyone and played each ball to its merits. I'd like to thank the crowd."
So Bangladesh record their second win over Sri Lanka in ODIs. The first was at Bogra in 2006. Thanks for your company, especially through the agonising three and a half hours in the morning when fog delayed play.
We'll see you in the final on Friday. Let's hope the weather cooperates. Cheers!
now Naeem gets in to the act, he charges down the pitch and drives him firmly past mid-off, in all the excitement he hugs his partner
gets on his knee early and paddles it away to fine leg
very risky but he just clears the offside, he makes room to carve it over but it's just out of the reach of jayawardene at extra cover
makes room to slam it again but finds short extra cover
take that again! Murali overpitches outside leg, he makes room and smacks it in the front foot with brute forces and crashes it past the arc between mid-off and cover
full on the pads and driven to long-on
tucks it off his pads to the deep on the on side
the quicker one, he chops it back to the bowler
what a treat it is watching this guy bat, Murali comes round the wicket, he makes plenty of room and slams it square of the wicket on the off side, he finds the gap and beats sweeper cover
Murali continues
We are already in the 3rd Powerplay which is for 3 overs
same ball and the same result, he taps it to point
gets beside the line and steers it to point and Shakib sends him back
shuffles at the crease and whips it down to midwicket
very poor shot and an excellent catch by Murali, Raqibul goes for broke and tries to clear long-off, he plays away from the body and the ball is skied towards mid-off, Murali runs back, tumbles and takes a difficult catch
defends with soft hands again
defends softly to the off side and Raqibul sends his partner back
places it in front of mid-off with soft hands and sets off very quickly
Shakib's been very entertaining to watch. Bangladesh should win this comfortably
taps it with soft hands and sets off quickly
strays on the pads and he clips it towards fine leg, he puts pressure on Murali
