At Melbourne, January 1

At Melbourne, January 1. England won by three wickets. Following immediately after the Test, the one-day International was inevitably an anti-climax with both sides showing obvious signs of tiredness. A crowd of only 18,977 (100,000 below the ground's capacity) reflected the mood, and one of the hottest days of a scorching week did nothing to lessen it. It was Denness's turn to put Australia in when he won the toss. Ian Chappell played especially well, but their innings as a whole was not well geared and they were bowled out with 5.3 of their 40 overs unused.
Amiss began brilliantly for England, driving Thomson and Hurst for several straight - and extra-cover fours to make it 26 for no wicket after three overs. The tempo slackened when he was out in the 15th over, but the situation was always under control. Fletcher hit some powerful drives and victory came from the first ball of the 38th over. Ian Chappell was Man of the Match for Australia and Amiss for England.
