At Melbourne, February 9 (day/night). Australia won by seven wickets and so won the finals 2-0. The margin of victory was a true index of Australia's superiority in all departments. The pitch was damp and of poor quality but, considering that it provided ample turn, India with their two spin bowlers should have thrived. Put in, the Indians were bowled out for 187, four of their last six batsmen being run out and Amarnath being dismissed handled the ball (the first instance in a one-day international) after pushing away a turning ball from Matthews that spun back towards his wicket. Matthews accounted more directly for Srikkanth, with a spectacular return catch, and Vengsarkar, two of the three batsmen to contribute significantly. With Border scoring a commanding 65, Australia comfortably drove home the advantage of a sound start.
