†AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN 1983-84

At Sydney, January 10 (day/night)

15-Apr-1985
At Sydney, January 10 (day/night). Australia won by 34 runs. Wessels's 92 from 122 balls provided him with a briskly efficient start to a competition which ended with his winning the award for the outstanding player of the qualifying series. It also secured his Australian team position, which was very much in doubt. Wessels and Border put on 140 in 93 minutes, after which Marsh, in a return to form, struck 66 from 48 balls. Imran Khan had surprised some by fielding first after winning the toss, more than one of his side having had little experience of batting under lights, and Pakistan were soon struggling against the fast in-swingers of Rackemann. Only while Miandad and Imran were adding 86 at a run a minute could Pakistan be optimistic of success. Both were run out in quick succession, Miandad controversially. He hurled his bat to the ground when given out by new international umpire, Randell, but television replays supported the decision. Miandad claimed to have been confused by the popping crease from the Test match of the previous week.
