The Australian Men's Cricket Team competing at the 17th Maccabiah Games has its sights firmly set on taking home a gold medal. The team is being captained by Jonathan Weinstock, a first-grade player in Victoria's elite cricket competition, while the bulk of the players heil from the Maccabi Ajax Cricket Club in Melbourne. Both David Gelbart and vice-captain Daniel Kave were members of Australia's team that captured gold in 1997, and this 2005 team has a healthy balance of older and younger players with a diverse range of talents.
The players who will be representing Australia are:
Jonathan Weinstock (c)
An attacking Wicket keeper and a solid top order batsman who is a first
grade player in Victoria's elite cricket competition. He has also played as
a professional in England, and has played with and against a number of first
class cricketers including Matthew Elliott.
Daniel Kave (v/c)
A consistent top-order batsman playing in his second Maccabiah Games, Kave
is also crafty offspinner who is never scared to toss the ball up way above
the batsman's eye level. He is also a handy wicket-keeper and a compulsive
slogger who is well regarded for his ability to clear the pickets - ideally
suited to the one-day form of the game.
Daniel Onas
A tall right hand top order batsman and right arm opening bowler, Onas is in
the prime of his cricketing career. Having recently captured the Maccabi
Ajax Cricket Club Best and Fairest-Club Championship double, Onas is very
happy and excited to be playing cricket in the country he was born, and
hopes to contribute toward the team winning gold.
David Harris
A multi-talented sportsman, Harris is a right-arm off-spinner who has also
scored a 200 with the bat. He has never prepared better for competition and
hopes the batsmen take him on. He is a champion boxer and his fighting
spirit should see him go a long way toward helping the team achieve success.
Jeremy Weiss
A junior state discuss champion who switched to cricket after career-ending
inner-ear injury, Weiss Hard hitting middle-order batsman and handy left-arm
medium bowler. One to watch - he could be the find of the tournament.
Jonty Rosenthal
Rosenthal is a classy 5"2 ex-South African top order batsman who has the
tendency to spread fields early in the innings. What Rosenthal lacks in
height he makes up for in his ability - he is lightning between the wickets
and likes to score in quick time.
Garry Litinsky
A fiery right-arm opening bowler and a dependable lower-order batsman, the
"Big Russian" possesses an even temperament and renowned for nudging the
ball around and stealing quick singles. Litinsky's work rate is second to
none.
David Gelbart
Playing in his second Maccabiah Games, Gelbart is an unconventional
medium-fast bowler as well as a solid batsman who can easily adapt to any
playing conditions. Regarded for his superior fitness, Gelbart always
arrives at the ground Ready to Prepare and is looking forward to some steamy
Tel Aviv days in the Mediterranean sun.
Marc Lipsitz
A graphic designer by trade, Lipsitz is an emerging young fast bowler who
bowls an unwavering line and length - captains can always rely upon Lipsitz
to take important wickets and to stem the flow of runs. He is also one of
the best number eleven batsmen in the game.
Jared Raleigh
An emerging top/middle order right-hand batsman whose painfully thin
physique does not hinder his ability to smash the ball all around the park.
Raleigh is a super talent and is also a superstar of Australian Rules
Football, a testament to his all-round ability.
Daniel Svirskis
A former opening batsman and leg-spinner who now bats at #10 and bowls
off-spin, Svirskis is renowned for his performances under pressure, and his
sublime fielding skills. Svirskis recently captured a career-best 9/43 in
the first innings of a Grand Final, and his all-round ability suits him well
for the one-day matches.
Dylan Weiner
Weiner is the only West Australian representative of the side, and is the
real x-factor of this Australian team. Weiner can bowl leg-spin, keep
wickets and is handy with the bat. Not since Julian has Australia seen a
Weiner this good.
