Dr. Ali Bacher, former cricket captain of South Africa and the former managing director of the United Cricket Board of South Africa, has accepted an invitation from the University of the West Indies to deliver the prestigious Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Lecture on April 5, 2004 in Barbados.
Bacher joins a list of distinguished cricket experts who have lectured to large audiences at an event regarded as the premier activity `beyond the boundary' during the period of the Barbados Test.
The inaugural lecture was delivered by the late Michael Manley, cricket writer and prime minister of Jamaica. The list includes cricket legends such as Richie Benaud, Michael Holding, Wes Hall, Allan Rae, and Conrad Hunte. John Major, the former prime minister of Great Britain, delivered the lecture in 2000.
Professor Hilary Beckles, Director of the Cricket Research Centre and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, stated that the invitation to Dr Bacher was most timely, reflecting the University's continuing effort to provide discussion on the most relevant issues facing the Caribbean.
Dr. Bacher will lecture on the theme "World Cup Cricket: Challenges, pitfalls and Opportunities".
