The BCCI has announced that it has formed a women's cricket committee whose duties will include organising tournaments.
The board, which finally took over the running of women's cricket in India last week, has decided that two women's tournaments will be conducted annually.
One competition is a straightforward one-day limited overs tournament. But the other is something of a surprise - it will comprise two-day matches, with 90 overs during each day.
This will make India just the second nation, behind Australia, to play anything other than one-day cricket and this should help towards improving their Test cricket.
But with rumours circulating that Test cricket could be scrapped at some point in the future, how much of an advantage the two-day competition will be is yet to be seen.
"All affiliated units of the BCCI will constitute a women's wing," said a board statement. "The tournaments will be played at the zonal level and also at the all India level as per the existing system."
There will also be a limited-overs under-19 tournament, which will be limited to one-day matches.
