Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh ensured that India made mincemeat of England and what looked like a difficult task of scoring 387 in the fourth innings. With the momentum of that win, they will surely take some stopping when the second and final match begins in Mohali on Friday.
As defeats go, this one will have ripped the heart out of England. Dominant for the best part of four days, they were torn apart by the brilliance of Virender Sehwag and then the sheer class of Sachin Tendulkar and a Yuvraj Singh who came of age in the Test arena.
That spells real trouble for England, who have just a few days to get themselves up again and find a way to beat an India side that is beginning to fire on all cylinders. If Rahul Dravid rediscovers his touch, they will be virtually unbeatable, at least on home soil.
And so to Mohali, where India beat Australia just a month ago and where they have lost just once - back in 1994 - in eight Tests. Four of them have been draws, but of course England need to win to draw the series.
Bet365 make India 4/5 to win the final match, while England are 15/2 and the draw is a 6/4 chance.
I'll have a full preview of the second Test very soon, so please check back for updates.
