Chris Cairns is to undergo keyhole surgery on his right knee on Tuesday to remove a piece of cartilage.
New Zealand Cricket sports science medical co-ordinator Warren Frost said Cairns should be able to resume training on Friday and is expected to be fully available for the National Bank Series One-Day International matches against India, which begin on December 26.
Cairns will however be unavailable for the two Tests against India.
