If you're thinking about having a punt on the forthcoming Test series between West Indies and England, you might be finding it difficult to know which market offers the best chance of making a decent return. With this in mind, the chaps at Sporting Index have put their heads together and come up with a few points for the serious punter to consider...
Current form
After firing blanks during the recent three-match Test series in Sri Lanka, even the optimists are thinking twice about taking a patriotic plunge on the England boys bringing home any Caribbean booty. Brave and dogged English displays at the crease salvaged draws in the opening two Tests in Sri Lanka, but those gutsy performances were erased from the memory following their crushing defeat in Colombo in the third and final Test.
It's not all doom and gloom though. On the plus side (from an English perspective) the Windies have also struggled recently, and come into this series on the back of a bruising 3-1 defeat at the hands of South Africa. Brian Lara's men lacked a penetrative edge to their bowling on African soil with the Boks scoring a staggering 2355 first-innings runs during the four Tests. England haven't won a series in the Caribbean for 36 years, but they might be arriving at the perfect moment.
Men to watch
Michael Vaughan; England failed to score more than 300 runs in any innings during the Sri Lankan series, so they have a lot to prove at the crease. Will Vaughan continue the poor form he's shown since becoming captain, and could it be worth punting that he won't get many runs?
Chris Gayle; England's bowlers had a tough time against South Africa's Graeme Smith last summer. Is another hard-hitting left-handed opening batsman going to cause them further headaches?
Wise words
When asked about the series, Sporting Index's Senior Cricket Trader said:
"The expectation is that the bat will dominate the ball for much of the series. Both teams have a far greater wealth of experience in batting, compared to their bowling attacks. Alongside that, Caribbean pitches don't seem to provide as much assistance to bowlers now as they did in the West Indian glory days of the 1970s and '80s. It will be fascinating viewing to see which bowlers, if any, step up and become the matchwinner for their side in what promises to be a closely contested series."
He also explained that "we will be betting all four live matches In-Running, including betting on Win Indices, Batsman Runs and Team Runs.... All series prices will be updated after each of the matches"
