Last Saturday Central School came from bottom team in 2002 to top of the heap in 2003. They played and beat the highly fancied Malapoa College U-15 team in the final of the UNELCO Shield cricket competition.
Central batted first and were in a bit of trouble early. When Michael and skipper Brenden came together they were only 2 for 13. However some good batting saw Michael make 24 and Brenden go on to a good pugnacious 28. He was not stylish but was very effective. The UNELCO Champion Player of 2003, Lazaro Carlot looked good in compiling his 17 but let himself down with a injudicious attempt to cut off his middle stump. He missed and was bowled. However the Central boys, aided by 37 extras, ended up with 118 runs from their allotted 20 overs. The best of the Malapoa bowlers was Peter Daniel who ended with 3 for 11 of 3 overs.
The Malapoa boys had to scorre at 6 an over to win. Max. Tabiupo was the best of batters with a strong 24. The only others to get double figures were Alistair Eldads (18) Julius Due (12) and Kenneth Donald (11). Malapoa were still well in it at 6 for 90 with 6 overs left, however, two run outs and two wickets to Michael for no further runs saw a monumental collapse from Malapoa to cede victory and the UNELCO Shield to Central School. Central's best bowlers on the day were Lazaro (3/22) Michael (3/26) and Ashley (2/11).
Well done to all the boys who played UNELCO U-15s in 2003. Well done to UNELCO whose sponsorship is very welcome by all.
