Corey Collymore's troublesome back has ruled him out of forthcoming
tours of Bangladesh and Sharjah.
The 21-year-old Barbadian fast bowler was bothered by soreness in the
recent Toronto Cricket Festival in which he was forced to miss the
last three matches.
Chairman of selectors Mike Findlay said yesterday that Collymore went
through a fitness test after his return to the Caribbean last week
Monday and it was recommended that he continue to receive
physiotherapy in Barbados.
Collymore bowled impressively in his first outing in limited-overs
internationals in the DMC Cup against India.
Although he took only two wickets in three matches, he conceded just
3.28 runs an over in his 28 overs.
Fitness tests were also carried out on fast bowler Reon King and
off-spinner Nehemiah Perry, but they were pronounced fit, Findlay
said.
King was troubled by a side strain, while a torn thigh muscle which
Perry sustained on the preceding tour of Singapore prevented him from
playing in any of the six matches in Toronto.
There is a call-up for Barbadian left-arm fast bowler Pedro Collins,
who is yet to play One-Day Internationals.
There is no room, however, for his Wanderers clubmate and fellow pacer
Hendy Bryan, who went on the trips on Singapore and Toronto.
Vincentian fast bowler Nixon McLean returns after missing the Toronto
leg because of duties with Hampshire in the English County
Championship.
As stated earlier by the selection committee, Curtly Ambrose replaces
fellow veteran pacer Courtney Walsh.
The selectors also announced that Ambrose and Jimmy Adams would join
the team in Bangladesh for the two One-Day Internationals after
fulfilling a coaching commitment to the West Indies Cricket Board's
sponsors, Cable & Wireless in the Cayman Islands.
Clive Lloyd will again double as manager/coach while Denis Waight is
physiotherapist/trainer.
The team leaves the Caribbean today for Bangladesh where they will
play a three-day match, starting October 4, and One-Day Internationals
on October 8 and 9.
In Sharjah, they will compete in the Charity Benefit Fund series that
also involves Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
West Indies will play both teams twice in the preliminary round, and
the teams with the best record will meet in the final on October 22.
The team:
Brian Lara (captain), Sherwin Campbell, Ridley Jacobs, Shivnarine
Chanderpaul, Jimmy Adams, Ricardo Powell, Wavell Hinds, Chris Gayle,
Adrian Griffith, Nehemiah Perry, Curtly Ambrose, Mervyn Dillon, Nixon
McLean, Reon King, Pedro Collins.
