Cricket in Bali - July 2002

It was on for young and old at the Bukit oval on Sunday, with the expat junior team-The Braveheartstaking on the Sidakarya juniors. This was followed by an entertaining adult game between Yeri's 11 and Umbu's side, as a prelude to the big league clash between Sidakarya and Kuta next week and the big national League fixture against Jakarta the following week. The Bravehearts elected to bat first in the junior game after winning the toss and began well with Mathew Crowley striking the ball confidently for 21 before being run out. Suda added 22 to this and Max Kirsten 19. With Max Lewis thumping a few at the end the expat juniors had scored 101 from 25 overs. Unfortunately Cris and Dan Freeman failed to get going with the bat but it was good to see newcomers, Joe Nat and Gabriel having a go. John very kindly offered to play for the opposition who were 1 short and was there at the end when Sidakarya passed the Braveheart score for the loss of 8 wkts. Edi Agus Tinus made 19, but it was undoubtedly the gifted Putra Dermawan who won the game for Sidakarya with 33 not out. The adult fixture was not so close, but nevertheless entertaining for players and spectators alike.

Umbu Frenki Shony won the toss and elected to bat on a worn pitch. Paul Ingram opened the batting only to see his stumps shattered by a low ball from Zac. Umbu followed quickly but Soni Hawoe with 61 not out and Agus Abadi, gave substance to the innings. ax Kirsten, Max Lewis, Gabriel and Joe all added something to a final total of 158. Suda Arsa claimed 3 wickets for Yeri's team, including clean bowling Agus for 31. Dan Freeman got 2 scalps and Tyson Horn 1. Umbu opened the bowling for his side and quickly got rid of Zac for 1, and Alan Wilson for 8, disturbing the latter's furniture with a medium fast left arm delivery which pitched perfectly. According to the batsman, the ball swung both ways and cut viciously off the pitch. Yeri offered some resistance with 25 and Dan Freeman got 17 after Wayan was knocked unconscious by an Umbu "flyer". The remainder collapsed to be all out for 85. Paul Ingram bowled tidily for 1-16 and young Joe Fenelon took 2 wickets with his leg spin.
