ENGLAND v HOLLAND

Toss: England

15-Apr-1997
Toss: England. International debut: F. Jansen.
Hick, restored after resting an injured hamstring, insured England against an upset with a century. He completed it in the final over with his second six, and also struck six fours in 133 balls. Thorpe had been the dominant partner as they added 143 in 25 overs; he scored 89 in 82 balls before being trapped by Lefebvre, who was barely fit but bowled heroically. The rest of England's line-up still looked experimental. Stewart and Neil Smith opened again - and Smith did his job, with 31 in 33 balls - while Atherton remained down the order. But a total of 279 was disappointing and, later, sharp Dutch running re-emphasised the raggedness of the English fielding. England had planned to use three spinners on a dead pitch, until Illingworth was taken ill, and the seam bowlers had mixed fortunes: Cork, troubled by his knee injury, was expensive, though DeFreitas, bowling ten overs off the reel, claimed a creditable three for 31. Van Noortwijk and the 18-year-old Zuiderent scored Holland's first fifties at this level, adding 114 in 27 overs. But England's nerves were settled once van Noortwijk, trying for a third six, was caught in the deep.
Man of the Match: G. A. Hick.
