Toss: New Zealand

Toss: New Zealand. International debuts: D. Gough, S. D. Udal.
A grey day produced a mainly grey match, coloured for England by promising debuts from fast bowler Darren Gough and off-spinner Shaun Udal, who helped bowl them to victory after New Zealand had restricted their batsmen to 224 for eight on a niggardly pitch. England left out Thorpe and Defreitas from their 13, and Atherton once again anchored the innings with 81. But no one else passed 24 and the prospects of a big total vanished when Pringle worked his way through the middle order to take five for 45; no one had taken five wickets in a one-day international in England since the 1983 World Cup. Morrison was out of the attack by them with a strained hamstring.
Gough dismissed Crowe with his sixth ball in international cricket and returned to the attack to york Young, who was trying to match Atherton's innings. Udal, bowling nice, looping off-breaks, dismissed both Parore and Rutherford and New Zealand faded away. Ray Illingworth, England's new chairman of selectors, said his team's performance was worth only seven out of ten.
Man of the Match: M. A. Atherton. Attendance: 17,812; receipts £424,135.
