A professional display brought England their seventh victory in their last eight limited-overs games against West Indies. In contrast, the West Indians lacked the necessary discipline. Put in, on a morning that began cloudy but brightened later, they made a flying start. When Simmons was caught, it was still only the sixth over and 34 runs were on the board. Small in the eleventh over, his first, bowled Greenidge with one that nipped back, and in his second over Richards was brilliantly caught by Emburey off a full-blooded square slash. In the intermediate over, Richards had struck Dilley (6-0-41-1) for three fours. When Pringle dismissed Richardson in the fourteenth over, Logie and Hooper set about saving the innings. But the wicket was slow, and with Small and Pringle moving the ball about, their stand of 97 took 29 overs. Each faced 96 deliveries for his 51. When England batted, Walsh and Ambrose bowled erratically and 45 came from the first ten overs. Greenidge at slip took a fine catch, low to his left to remove broad in the sixteenth over, but Gatting, after a hesitant start, played excellently. Gooch (93 balls) was caught at second slip in the 30th over, and after an unhappy debut for Lynch, the captain (125 balls, seven fours) and Pringle saw England home without further alarm. Pringle, a much criticised inclusion, justified the selectors' decision with his steady bowling and untroubled batting.
