In a fitting tribute to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first-ever cricket match played between Fiji and Australia, a collection former Australian cricketers traveled to Fiji recently for two one-day matches against the Fiji national team.
The first-ever match between Fiji and Australia was held in Suva in 1905, while the Australian team was on its way home from the Ashes series in England. The Fiji team consisted of 18 players including star bowler Ratu Pope Cakobau, who took five wickets for the match, including that of the great Victor Trumper.
This time around the Australian team included Geoff Lawson, Colin Miller and Ray Bright. The event was supported by Cricket Australia, Cricket New South Wales and the Australian Cricketer's Association.
Unfortunately the weather played a major part in the celebrations, with the first match in Nadi washed out, while the game in Suva was reduced to a 20/Twenty format, won by Fiji.
