On Friday 2 June 2000, it was conveyed to the United Cricket Board by legal representatives for Mr Herschelle Gibbs, that he admitted having been approached with a view to match fixing, that he had agreed to participate in this regard (but in the event did not do so and received no money), and that previous denials he had made to the UCBSA in that respect had not been true.
Mr Gibbs has now confirmed this in evidence before the King Commission yesterday. The UCBSA welcomes the fact that Mr Gibbs has taken this step.
The Executive Committee believes that the UCBSA cannot anticipate the findings of the King Commission. Equally, however, it believes that in the light of Mr Gibbs' admissions in his own evidence, the UCBSA is obliged to withdraw him from representative cricket with immediate effect. He will thus not tour Sri Lanka with the South African team (the team departs for Sri Lanka on 30 June 2000).
A disciplinary inquiry will be held at the earliest appropriate time.
Mr Gibbs will continue to receive from the UCBSA the contractual benefits to which he is entitled by law during this period.
