Great Britain - Senior

23-Jun-2005

Team GB has high hopes of coming home from Israel with a medal. With three squad members - Lawrence Bensusan, Andrew Daniels and wicketkeeper Michael Jacobs having competed at previous Maccabiahs, some fresh faces have come in to spice things up. Team Manager Nigel Rothband represented his country at three previous Maccabiah Games and his experienced should hold the team in good stead for the challenge that lies ahead.
Darren Gerard (Captain) (Oxford University & Brondesbury)
Team skipper Gerard proves that age is no barrier. As the youngest member of the GB squad, the 21-year-old is their strike bowler with frightening arm speed. Last summer he got five wickets in an innings in the Varsity game against Cambridge at Lord's. He's spent most of the last year in France studying. A fitness freak who likes to let his hair down off the pitch. He's sure to be a hit at his first Maccabiah.
Jeremy Mordrick (Vice-captain)
The senior statesman of the squad, Woodford Wells all-rounder Mordrick is another Maccabiah debutante. The Essex man is Mr Experience having played at the highest level for his county. A clever swing bowler and powerful batsman he already has two seven-wicket hauls to his name this term and could be the competition's surprise package. He can bowl all day.
Michael Jacobs (Malden Wanderers)
Wicketkeeper. Tricky Mickey, known as quick hands, Mike or Michael to his teammates, will be sure to keep his fellow GB members on their toes. He loves practising and being at the forefront of training drills. His sharp reflexes will test the best of the rest while he's a clever batsman who likes to accumulate.
Daniel Becker
Boris plays both days of the weekend, notably for Cockfosters first team in the Middlesex County League. He's also a key member of London Maccabi Vale. A top-order batsman who is also happy to donn the gloves behind the stumps if necessary. Excellent off his legs and with a safe pair of hands to boot, Becker is looking to serve up a treat in Israel.
Laurence Bensusan
Perth Maccabi skipper Bensusan is a class and experienced act. Having emigrated to Australia several years ago he's champing at the bit to join the Barmy army and show the rest of the cricketing world just what he can do. A former Vale player, he likes to get a move on with some bludgeoning shots.
Danny Caro
The 32-year-old left-handed batsman has shed an incredible six stone to make the final squad. A former
Middlesex colt and Hampstead player, sports journalist Caro currently captains Maccabi League champions Casual Nomads. He can't wait to test himself on the biggest stage and might surprise some with his occasional offspin.
Andrew Daniels
Recently married Daniels is a left-arm fast bowler who used to captain Vale. He proves that appearances can be deceiving as carrying no body fat he pushes the ball through at alarming speed with seam and swing movement.
Eddie Davis
Last season's Maccabi League batsman of the season, steady Eddie is a batsman with great stamina. A strong all-rounder he also bowls right-arm quick with an athletic action. The Belmont & Edgware player arrives at the Games fresh from his brother's wedding in the South of France.
Gavin Diamond
Swing king Diamond missed out on the 1997 Games due to study commitments. Having made the South Africa squad then he has since become an integral part of Maccabi League champions Casual Nomads with his unerring line and length making him an automatic choice for Rothband's squad.
Alex Haffner
Without doubt Haffner is the team's best fielder. A point specialist and also a back-up keeper, the solicitor plays for Old Haberdashers on Saturday's and vice-captains Newlands & Northwood in the Maccabi League. He has come on in leaps and bounds with the bat in recent seasons.
Richard Reggel
A line and length merchant, Reggel earned a late call up into the squad after some good recommendations. He is Mr Reliable for Belmont & Edgware and a panther in the field. Also a good footballer having excelled for Bafana Bafana in the Maccabi Southern Football League.
Martin Smulovich
A raw talent. Smulovich looks set to compete at Maccabiahs for the next decade. An athletic fielder, Smuly is relishing the prospect of delivering some of the competition's quickest deliveries. He plays for MAL.
Saul Weitzman
The Jerusalem Express is a big player for London Maccabi Vale. He rarely bowls a loose delivery and is capable of some unbelievable takes in the outfield.
The Management
Nigel Rothband - Team Manager
The veteran of 3 previous Maccabiot winning a silver medal in 1985. Still opening the batting for Chorleywood CC he has represented Cheadle, Didsbury, and North of Ireland to name a few during a long and successful career. A qualified coach with a no nonsense approach.
Sacha Hatteea - Assistant Manager/Coach.
A qualified Coach who is the son of a Test Cricketer. Having learnt his cricket on the playing fields of Harrow School he has played for numerous clubs and represented Hertfordshire. This will be his first visit to Israel.
