India fail to appear for press conference
India skipped the post-match press conference after their 40-run win over New Zealand today. According to PTI, India captain Gautam Gambhir, who is standing in for MS Dhoni, left the stadium after the post-match presentation citing "personal reasons", and no other player from the team was sent to face the media either.
The reasons for lapse were disputed, with the team management blaming the Assam Cricket Association, and vice-versa. Whether the the press conference was mandatory or not was also unclear. Sami-ul-Hasan, ICC's Communications and Media Operations manager, said, "For ICC events the post-match conference is mandatory. The losing captain comes first followed by the winning captain. For a bilateral series like this, contact BCCI." But when contacted, BCCI chief administrative officer, Prof Ratnakar Shetty, said, "I'm not aware of any regulations. I can't comment on this."
New Zealand's media manager, Ellery Tappin, said that there is no written clause in the memorandum of understanding between the two boards that the teams have to meet the press after every game. However, Tappin said: "It's a done thing -it's a convention, a regular event- and we have no problem in doing them." This is not the first time that India have skipped the post-match press conferences.
