INDIA v SRI LANKA

At Singapore, April 3

15-Apr-1997
At Singapore, April 3. India won by 12 runs. Toss: India. International debut: R. Dravid.
Both teams struggled on the same pitch which had seen so many runs flow the previous day, but India managed to defend a meagre 199. The pitch had lost its bounce and India took first innings in extreme heat and humidity. Sidhu, who batted for three hours, was later taken to hospital after suffering heatstroke. His patient 94 anchored India; of the rest, only Tendulkar and Srinath reached double figures. The Sri Lankans bowled well, but they were in deep trouble when Srinath reduced them to 23 for four after Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana, their unconventional openers, were caught in the circle by the third over. Mahanama and Tillekeratne added a disciplined 92 but, once they were dismissed by Raju, Sri Lanka were bowled out with 11 balls to spare.
Man of the Match: J. Srinath.
