INDIA v WEST INDIES

At Wellington, March 10

15-Apr-1993
At Wellington, March 10. West Indies won by five wickets, their target having been revised to 195 from 46 overs. Toss: India. West Indies became the first team of the tournament to reach a rain-adjusted target, but there were alarms along the way. Pursuing 198, they had taken 50 from their first six overs, with Lara on 36, and were a comfortable 81 from 11 when rain forced them off for 20 minutes. But the break, which cut four overs and three runs from the equation, unsettled the batsmen: Lara went almost at once, swiftly followed by Simmons, to a falling catch by Tendulkar. Richardson and Logie also went quickly, but an unbroken stand of 83 from Arthurton and Hooper saw West Indies through.
The Indian innings had shown promise, with Azharuddin in his best form, though Tendulkar found Ambrose's lifter a problem. India had reached 166 in the 43rd over when Azharuddin, caught at deep mid-off, gave Cummins the first of his four wickets, as seven fell for 31 runs. Ambrose conceded a mere 24 in ten overs.
Man of the Match: A. C. Cummins. Attendance: 6,634.
