Jamaica Schools: St. George's axed from tournament
The Jamaica Gleaner
Defending champions and overwhelming favourites St. George's College
have been evicted from the Jackie Hendriks Invitational Under-14
cricket competition, according to tournament director Wilbert Parkes.
"St. George's College did not send in two of their results and
countless efforts by me to get the results from them proved futile,"
Parkes said.
Parkes said he had heard St. George's and Calabar were locked on
eight points each.
However, St. George's coach Winston Wilson said the results of his
team's game against Jamaica College was given to his school's
administrative office to be faxed but there was a mix-up.
Wilson said St. George's ended on 12 points, two more than their
nearest rivals and therefore were the zone winners.
"I made sure Mr. Parkes got the results of our away game against
Tivoli Gardens Comprehensive as the next round was due to start the
following Tuesday, though it was the duty of the home team to send in
the result," Wilson said.
Wilson also said he made preparations to host Wolmer's in the
quarter-finals but someone told him Wolmer's were being hosted by
Jamaica College, therefore, he went to Kingston College, where
Campion College were playing, to speak with Parkes who told him he
had not received the results from St. George's and had given first
place in the zone to JC who were on 10 points and the second place to
Calabar who had eight.
"It is a great disappointment for the players including Richard
Johnson and captain Brian Hutchinson who both had two outstanding
performances and were confidently expecting to cop the championship
for a second consecutive year," Wilson said.
