A heated debate broke out today in the West Bengal Assembly here
regarding the plan to felicitate Sourav Ganguly. Congress members of
the Legislative Assembly demanded that Ganguly be given a state
felicitation. However, the State Minister of Sports Subhas Chakrabarty
stated that since Ganguly had already been given a felicitation a few
months back, it would be incorrect to do so again. ``We have already
honoured him in November 1999. So we cannot give Ganguly a state
felicitation for every success that he gets.''
However, Congress members then created a din in the Assembly by
banging on tables and jumping on the desks stating that Ganguly should
be felicitated for becoming the captain of the Indian side. At the end
of the heated debate, the speaker decided to send an on line
congratulatory message to Ganguly on behalf of the Assembly for his
recent achievements as the captain of the Indian team.
