The Western Warriors will be bolstered by the return of Australian one-day representative Damien Martyn for their Pura Milk and Mercantile Mutual Cup clashes with Tasmania in Hobart next week.
WA selectors were unable to consider Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist following advice from medicos and the ACB. Gilchrist has struggled with a virus throughout the one-day series and has been instructed to rest before embarking on a gruelling seven week tour of New Zealand. The Australians depart in mid-February for six one-day internationals and three Tests, before returning home on April 5.
"We've already had to nurse Simon Katich back to health this season and there was no way we'd take any risks with a player of the calibre of Adam Gilchrist," said WA Chairman of Selectors, Kim Hughes.
"He is of enormous value to Australian cricket and must be given every chance to get himself right before heading to New Zealand."
Martyn will depart for New Zealand from the east coast. His inclusion for the four day match is one of two changes to the side which beat the Redbacks outright last month.
Also coming into the 12 is Willetton wicketkeeper Mark Walsh, who played one first-class match for WA last season. Out of the 12 go Michael Dighton and Darren Wates.
The Warriors must win all three remaining Pura Milk Cup matches to make the final.
