Martyn, 33, scored 1353 runs last year at an average of 56.37. Of his six centuries, his 161 against Sri Lanka at Kandy was the highest. He failed to reach 40 in only two of Australia's 14 Tests in 2004.
He received the award from John Howard, Australia's Prime Minister, at the end of the first day's play of the third Test against Pakistan at Sydney. The medal honours Alan McGilvray, who was a commentator on ABC radio for more than 50 years.
