Guy Bulpitt's best Minor Counties bowling for Staffordshire was negated by a face-saving innings from Cumberland's Martin Lewis at Askam.
The Cannock slow left-armer was the catalyst behind a Cumberland collapse from 81 for four to 85 for eight in a post-lunch slide that saw five wickets fall in just 18 balls.
But Lewis then chanced his arm to hit Bulpitt for four sixes - two each over long-on and mid-wicket - and he had made 61 off 81 balls when he was finally last man out, bowled by David Boden with the Cumberland total raised to a respectable 153 off 70.1 overs.
Bulpitt's final figures were six for 71 off 29 overs, and Laurie Potter then maintained the Cannock influence with 44 before he was caught behind cutting at a wide delivery from Lewis.
Staffordshire stumbled from 79 for one to 113 for six - Chris Stockdale's first appearance for Cumberland since 1992 yielding figures of three for nine off nine overs - but David Womble (15 not out) and Mark Humphries (12 not out) took them to the close on 140 for six off 55 overs.
