Devon, one of the Minor Counties kings of the 1990s, suffered one of their
worst championship defeats for years against Herefordshire at Kington.
A startling second innings collapse saw nine wickets fall for just 16 runs as
43 for one dramatically declined to 59 all out. Herefordshire secured victory
before tea on day two by an innings and 90 runs.
Skipper Nick Folland scored 33 of the 59 - Devon's lowest championship total
since 1986 - with Herefordshire seamer John Shaw doing the bulk of the damage
to finish with the remarkable analysis of 3-2-4-4. The last eight Devon
batsmen scored just eight runs between them, and the last seven wickets fell
for seven runs.
Herefordshire had started the day by batting on in their first innings from
their overnight 273 for four. They added a further 100 in an unbroken
sixth-wicket stand between Karl Pearson (46 not out) and Neeraj Prabhu (48
not out) before declaring on 373 for five off 89 overs, a lead of 149 runs.
