The MTN Schools Project involves a sound relationship between the Western Province Youth Cricket Association, MTN and certain primary and high schools that have been identified in order to develop and enhance cricket at these schools.
The Western Province Youth division constitutes 5 regions, and in an effort to be as fair as possible two primary schools and two high schools have been identified in each region, with the following criteria utilised in the selection process :
(i) schools who are established as cricketing schools but find the standard of cricket and facilities waning;
(ii) potential cricketing schools and
(iii) the identification of schools in particularly the black `African' township areas with the potential to grow into cricketing schools.
The WPCA then makes a proposal/ presentation to the United Cricket Board and MTN who approves the respective schools.
The following schools were identified in 1999/2000: Boston PS, Eisleben Road PS, Prince George Drive PS, Simonsberg PS, Siyabulela PS, Mandela HS, Muizenberg HS, Pinelands HS, Sarepta HS, Spine Road HS.
For the coming season nine new schools were identified and "adopted" : Impendulo PS, St Joseph's PS, Zimasa PS, Belhar HS, Bellville Technical HS, Crestway HS, Oscar Meptha HS, Wynberg Boys' HS
It is hoped that this project, which is carried out in every UCB province, will not only grow the game but also improve the standard of cricket in all our communities in the country.
The MTN Schools met at a briefing function at Club 200, Newlands Cricket Ground on Wednesday 16 August 2000.
