Nash appeal dismissed

New Zealand Cricket National Commissioner Nick Davidson has dismissed the appeal of Dion Nash and the penalty, issued by the Association Commissioner on December 21, 2002, will stand.

As a result Nash will remain banned from playing any level of cricket until January 3, 2002.

New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive Martin Snedden reiterated that New Zealand Cricket is driving an improvement in player conduct at all levels and that this had been made clear before the start of the 2001/02 season.

"Prior to the commencement of the season I spoke to the captains, coaches and CEO's of all the major cricket associations signalling New Zealand Cricket's intent," said Snedden.

"It was made clear by me that suspension, rather than fines and suspended sentences, would be the appropriate penalty for proven breaches of the code of conduct.

"It's very disappointing that an experienced NZC contracted player has seriously breached the code.

"By doing so, in the face of the NZC's clear directives, he has given a poor example to other players and, at the same time, he has jeopardized his place in the CLEAR Black Caps.

"The selectors have been forced into a very difficult position.

"Nash was already under an injury cloud and having to decide whether to pick him, knowing he hasn't played any cricket for 15 days prior to the selection date (January 3, 2002), will be a tough decision."
