ENGLAND SQUAD FOR WEST INDIES
England have turned their back on the 'old guard' of David
Gower Allan Lamb and Mike Gatting for the winter tour to the
West Indies. It was felt by many that a senior batsman was
needed in the Caribbean but the selectors have decided to
look to the future. Alec Stewart will revert to his old
role of opening batsman enabling Jack Russell to return to
the team as wicket keeper. There are also places for Chris
Lewis Ian Salisbury Andy Caddick and Alan Igglesden.
Skipper Mike Atherton said England had made a clean break
with the past by choosing players aged 30 or under for the
Caribbean trip. It's not necessarily the end for older
players but we feel it is the best way to go he added.
We wanted to build on what happened at The Oval. We had some
good young players there and the side played with a lot of
spirit the Lancashire opener went on. David Gower's
omission from the squad will increase speculation that he
may retire from the game.

Eng winter tour 1994 - West Indies Tour
Skipper Michael Atherton has explained the decision to pick a new
young England saying: We wanted to build on what happened at The
Oval. We had good young players there and the side played with a
lot of spirit. We wanted a clean break with the past. Kent's
Alan Igglesden Notts all rounder Chris Lewis Somerset paceman
Andy Caddick and Sussex leg spinner Ian Salisbury have all won
recalls.
English cricket's old firm of David Gower Mike Gatting and Allan Lamb have been ignored for this winter's tour. Mike Atherton
will lead England's new generation on the toughest mission in
Test cricket when the tour begins on January 15. The 17 man party has few surprises though vice captain Alec Stewart is in his
old role as opening batsman Jack Russell is the specialist wicket keeper
David Gower's Test career looks sure to be over after he was left
out of the winter tour to the West Indies. The names of Gower
Mike Gatting and Allan Lamb are all missing from England's 17 man
squad and it will be a major surprise if any play Tests again.
Graham Gooch who ruled himself out of the tour said Gower
should go but the Hampshire star said: His comments came two or
three years too late.
Gloucestershire wicket keeper Jack Russell who had been out of
favour for the last 12 months will be in the Test team for the
tour. Alec Stewart who has kept wicket ahead of Russell will
resume his opening batsman's role with Michael Atherton. Atherton said: The up front positions will be crucial so Alec Stewart
will be best employed opening the batting while Jack keeps wicket
and bats seven.
ENGLAND A Tour to RSA
Glamorgan's Hugh Morris will lead the England A team on tour for
the third time when they visit South Africa later this year. He
will have Alan Wells of Sussex as his deputy after both were
left out of the senior party to take on the West Indies.
The 14 man squad includes five men who played in the Ashes
series this summer including Mark Lathwell and Peter Such. Rising batting stars John Crawley and Mal Loye will make their
first representative overseas trip.

tour will lead an A tour for a third time. Sussex batsman Alan
Wells favoured by many for a trip to the Caribbean will act as
Morris's number two in South Africa in December and January.
Surrey's Martin Bicknell and Kent's Martin McCague will spearhead
the bowling attack with Somerset's Mark Lathwell opening the

Morris leads strong squad to South Africa
Hugh Morris will lead a potent mixture of youth and experience in
South Africa this winter when he captains an England A tour for
the third time. Morris led strong batting sides to Sri Lanka (91)
and the West Indies (92), with Mark Ramprakash, Nasser Hussain
and Graham Thorpe all going on to establish themselves at Test
level.
But included in the 14-man party, who leave on 29 November for a
tough two-month trip, is a powerful bowling line-up as well as
solid batting, making this the strongest A-tour squad for years.
Morris, rewarded for a superb season in charge of Glamorgan, is
joined by the batsman Alan Wells, the fast bowlers Martin McCague
and Martin Bicknell and the wicketkeeper Steve Rhodes, all on
stand-by for the senior tour of the West Indies.
Keith Fletcher, the England manager, also made it clear at Lord's
yesterday that younger players like Mark Lathwell could also be
called to the West Indies if they strike form and Mike Atherton's
side suffer early injuries.
Morris, Bicknell, McCague, Lathwell, Mark Ilott and Peter Such
have Test experience, while Rhodes and Dominic Cork have played
at one-day level. Nine of Morris's squad have A-tour experience.

ENGLAND TOUR, QUOTE..UNQUOTE
David Gower conceded his Test match career may be over after
being overlooked for England's winter tour to the West
Indies. As time goes on it becomes harder and harder to
convince the powers that be that I'm their man said the
Hampshire left hander. He will be in the Caribbean working
for the media and mulling over his future in the game. I'm
not going to make any rash decision on the spur of the
moment. There are options and playing for Hampshire is very
much one of them
