A commanding century stand by Northants openers Tony Penberthy
and Alan Fordham was almost squandered at Northampton where Surrey, having scored 206 for seven, pushed the home side to the
third ball of the final over. Penberthy confirmed his fine allround form of recent days, with an undefeated 81.
Northants` performance in the field had been notable for the
accurate and incisive bowling of Mohammad Akram, who clearly benefited from Thursday`s public coaching session by John Emburey. He took four for 19 off eight overs.
