Pakistan pioneer dies
ABDUL HAFEEZ KARDAR, who captained Pakistan in their first 23 Tests, died yesterday in Islamabad, aged 72. Kardar, a lefthanded batsman and slow left-arm bowler, toured England with India in 1946 and played three Tests before becoming a citizen of Pakistan following Partition in 1947.
He won a Blue at Oxford and also played for Warwickshire between 1948 and 1950. His knowledge of English conditions proved useful when he led Pakistan on their first tour of England in 1954. Kardar became a leading cricket administrator when his playing days finished.
