Toss: Pakistan

Toss: Pakistan. Test debuts: India - P.H.Punkabi, N.S.Tamhane.
The first official Test Match to be played in Pakistan set the pattern for the series, both sides playing grim, defensive cricket. At no time did a definite result look likely. Pakistan, who won the toss, batted steadily. Hanif and Waqar Hassan put on 53 for the second wicket and Imtiaz Ahmed also showed good form. At the close of the first day Pakistan were 207 for five, but they were out for the addition of 50. Ghulam Ahmed bowled unchanged for 40 overs. India collapsed before the fast-medium attack of Mahmood Hussain and Khan Mohammad and Pakistan led by 109. They strengthened their position with a second wicket stand of 92 by Alim-ud-Din and Waqar Hassan and although Gupte's leg-breaks caused a collapse India were set to get 268 to win. After losing two wickets for 17 they did not attempt the task. Only 710 runs were scored in the four days.
