Cricket coaching methods have changed substantially over the years, and having Roland on hand in Israel, to convey these methods, in his unique, clear, concise and relaxed manner to local enthusiasts is a tremendous boost for local cricket. The ECC Level 1 coaching course details the main coaching points for the primary cricket areas, requiring each candidate to learn the technical points to be taught, and the best way for them to be conveyed. Areas covered included the numerous ground fielding and catching techniques, wicket keeping, both the basics of bowling and the different skills of both slow and swing bowling, and batting shots including the drive, forward defence, back foot drive, pull and cut, as well as running between the wickets.
The numerous steps in coaching each skill were explained, demonstrated and later performed by each applicant. Both written and practical tests were also completed.
Apart from the seven senior coaches who completed the course, six youngsters completed the ECC Introductory Course. These youngsters, aged 13 - 16, all live in the Negev area, and will all begin assisting the local coaches in conducting practice sessions for the younger players.
Roland is expected to return to Israel in early April, after having led his Dutch team in the World Cup in South Africa.
