24-Oct-1993
Some news on foreign players in South Africa:
West Indian batsman Clayton Lambert had a record-breaking debut for Northern Transvaal over the weekend. In scoring 214 against Transvaal he set up the following records: 1. Highest score on debut in South African first-class cricket for a batsman who has played first-class cricket in another country. 2. Highest score on debut by a Northern Transvaal batsman. 3. Highest score by a Northern Transvaal batsman against Transvaal. 4. His partnership of 308 with Joubert Strydom (109) broke the 67 year-old record for the second wicket partnership in a firstclass South African domestic competition.
Englishman Philip De Freitas also had a good start to his career in South Africa. Playing for Boland against Western Province, he took 5 wickets in the first innings and then had scores of 21 and 54. His first innings bowling figures were 31-9-80-5.
Malcolm Marshall has been appointed vice-captain of Natal. He will stand in for Jonty Rhodes when Rhodes (almost certainly) accompanies the South African team to India and Australia. Marshall recently scored a century in a club match in Durban and also scored 39 not out against Eastern Province on Saturday.
Carlisle Best from the West Indies has joined Western Province. Batting at number 4 against Boland, he scored 24 in the 1st innings.
West Indian Eldine Baptiste had bowling figures of 37.3-12-83-3 playing for Eastern Province against Natal.
Otis Gibson (West Indies) is playing for Border again this season. His first innings bowling figures against Castle Cup champions Orange Free State were 12-1-35-3. He didn't do so well with the bat and scored 0 in the first innings.
Yet another West Indian playing in SA is Franklyn Stephenson who is turning out for Orange Free State again. Playing against Border he scored 3 runs and then had bowling figures of 26-7-60-3.
