DUNEDIN -- New Zealand cricket selectors are to inquire about the availability of All Black rugby wing Jeff Wilson.
Convener of selectors Ross Dykes said the 23-year-old`s startling form during Otago`s Shell Trophy loss to Canterbury confirmed his status as one of New Zealand`s "special" cricketers.
Wilson followed up a career-best five for 34 at the bowling crease with a whirlwind 69 not out off 54 balls at Centennial Park, raising speculation of an international recall.
"We`ll definitely be talking to Jeff over the next week or so," Dykes said from Auckland yesterday.
"We didn`t want to put him under unfair pressure by approaching him prematurely, but his performance against Canterbury suggests his form is as good as ever. He`s a splendid player, and one we`d like to see available for all levels of cricket."
Wilson played four one-day internationals against Australia in 1993, but then put his New Zealand career on hold because of rugby commitments.
Wilson could not be contacted last night, but has already said this season that a return to top-level cricket -- form permitting -- was not out of the question. -- NZPA
