Australian Cricket Board Chief Executive Officer, Malcolm Speed, and United
Cricket Board of South Africa supremo, Ali Bacher, both expressed great
delight at the goings on in Colonial Stadium just before the break between
innings in today's historic match between their countries.
As Australia was about to complete its innings after being offered first
use of the drop-in pitch, Speed intimated that there is a realistic chance
of the same thing happening again next year.
"There are a few problems logistically given Australia tours India in
February-March and then after a seven week break has an Ashes series which
ends in early September. But if there is a window of opportunity, it will
be considered".
Dr Bacher was particularly upbeat about the idea even suggesting there is
no reason why a tri-series under the roof couldn't be considered.
"The idea has a great future and the pitch has so far has been outstanding.
The outfield is a little soggy but I really see this project having a great
future over the winter period".
Mr Speed was reasonably satisfied with the outfield and said while it
wasn't perfect, he was very pleased. He was equally happy with the offical
attendance figure of 20,679 at 6pm and suggested that Friday and Sunday
will see bigger attendances.
