SRI LANKA have appointed Bruce Yardley, the former Australia off-spinner, as their new coach. The Board of Control, who recently sounded out Allan Lamb for the job, yesterday announced that Yardley, 49, had signed a contract for 2.5 years, starting on Jan 20.

He replaces Dav Whatmore, who resigned in October to take up a two-year contract with Lancashire after guiding Sri Lanka to World Cup victory last March.

Whatmore`s main task, improving Lancashire`s championship form, will come into focus at the county`s annual meeting at Old Trafford today.
