Indian pace bowler Javagal Srinath said on Saturday he was
contemplating quitting one-day cricket and concentrating on Test
matches on the advice of Indian coach Kapil Dev. He said this in a
chat programme on Doordarshan, according to a press release from TWI.
The 30-year-old Karnataka bowler said he will take a final decision
and announce it in a couple of weeks time. Later while talking to an
Indian newspaper, Srinath expressed his unhappiness over Kapil Dev
revealing the details about his intention to retire from limited-overs
cricket to the media. ''I had wanted to make a formal announcement to
this effect in the middle of April. I had disclosed my intention of
retiring from one-day cricket to Kapil Dev during the Sharjah
tournament. But I didn`t expect him to inform the media about it.``
The Indian spearhead added ''it is not easy to quit, especially after
having played international cricket for a decade. I need time to let
the thought sink in. I need to compose myself before I address the
media.``
Earlier, Kapil Dev had said that Srinath had indicated during the Coca
Cola tournament in Sharjah his lack of interest to play in the limited
overs version of the game and concentrate on Tests. The former Indian
captain said "The indication given by the player was he was not too
keen to play one-day cricket. I don't think he will play one-dayers in
future. He is too important a player. In future he should be picked
only for Tests. This will ensure his longevity in the game" Kapil
said.
