The Caribbean Women's Cricket Championships are well under way in St Lucia. The six-team tournament, which began last Friday, actually consists of two competitions: firstly the round-robin event, and then a knockout series.
The final round of league matches will take place today, with St Lucia needing only to avoid defeat against Jamaica to retain the title that they won last year. St Lucia are on eight points, from four wins out of four to date, with Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago on six each. Dominica, Grenada and SVG (St Vincent and the Grenadines) make up the remaining teams in the
competition.
The West Indies failed to qualify for the 2000 CricInfo Women's World Cup, to be held in New Zealand later this year, after finishing out of the top eight in the 1997 World Cup. Barbados and Guyana, both traditional strongholds of the men's game, did not send teams to the women's championship.
