Root equals Sehwag, Elgar carries bat

13 Number of fifty-plus scores by Joe Root in Tests in 2015. This equals the record for the most such scores in a calendar year by a batsman. Virender Sehwag made 13 fifty-plus scores in 2010. Root has made 1372 runs at 62.36 in 2015 and has overtaken Alastair Cook as England's top run-scorer this year. Among England batsmen, only Michael Vaughan (1481 runs, 2002) and Dennis Amiss (1379, 1974) have scored more runs in a year.

This is the highest such contribution by a South Africa batsman in a Test innings since their readmission. The previous highest was Herschelle Gibbs' 196 out of 362 (54.14%) against India in Port Elizabeth in 2001-02. Dale Steyn also got to this milestone in the first innings. Morkel currently averages 27.70 against England, in comparison to Steyn's average of 31.62 against them.
