According to the Electronic Tele, an International Cricket
Conference ruling made at a recent meeting regarding international elegibility will prevent England from picking Birmingham-born,
Australian-raised batsman Andrew Symonds for the England `A` tour
of India. Before the meeting, rules stated that a player was tied
to a country once he had represented them at Test, international
or first-class level. The new ruling extends it to Under-19 level
as well. Despite previously being entitled to play for England
because of his dual nationality, Symonds has played for Australia
as an Under-19 rep so now he`s tied to us. If the ICC had of made
the ruling a few months earlier so would Jason Gallian!!
There`s nothing to stop Symonds playing for England should he
wish to do so by meeting the residency requirements, however,
which for a player of his current level means two years.
Gloucestershire also wish to retain Symonds as a that he will
(presumably) spend his English winters in Australia. Hmmm. Still
a few things to be sorted.
