The announcement of the location for the multi-faceted Cricket Centre of Excellence marks the culmination of an extensive two-year project. The following provides a summary of the search and selection process:
September 2001
Cricket Australia commissioned a review of the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy (CBCA) after identifying that due to the rise and maturation of state and territory institute programs around, the academy program needed to advance to another level to ensure it continued to serve as the finishing school for elite cricketers.

Following the results of the review, Cricket Australia announced plans to establish a Cricket Centre of Excellence to encompass four core functions: a player development unit to incorporate the CBCA program, a Sports science and medicine unit, an information resource centre and a coaching, umpiring, administration and curator unit.

Cricket Australia called for submissions from suitable proponents around the nation, including state cricket associations, universities and state sport institutes.

A recommendation committee of cricket experts and consultants was formed to establish the selection criteria, prepare an evaluation ranking system, and carry out the evaluation process.

An independent probity auditor was also appointed to oversee a fair and equitable evaluation of proposals.
An advisory group, consisting of Cricket Australia management was appointed to provide technical advice and support to the recommendation committee.

The recommendation committee selected the preferred proponent based on the primary criteria of facilities, weather and located. It also evaluated the cost of the preferred proponent to ensure the financial data met budget requirements.
