hard day in the field for the tourists.
Meanwhile England-A are saved from embarrasment by 18 year old Shah
as their tour of Australia gets underway.
30th October
Wasim Akram takes his 300th ODI wicket as Pakistan squeeze
a 3 wicket win in the first one-day International
against Zimbabwe
29th October
South Africa win again in the Titan Cup, comfortably beating India by 5 wickets.
28th October
Goa win their first Ranji Trophy game after eleven years of trying, beating
the Ranji champions, Karatanaka.
27th October
Titan Cup - the 6th game (between India and Australia) is washed out
without a ball being bowled
Shane Warne takes 5-35 as he returns to top level cricket after
his finger surgery.
26th October
The 2 W's destroy Zimbabwe's hopes of saving the 2nd test, as
Pakistan win by 10 wickets.
25th October
In the 2nd Pakistan-Zimbabwe test debutants Mbangwa and
Matambanadzo take 2 wickets each as Pakistan are dismissed
for 267. Zimbabwe recover from 1/2 to 136/3 at the close.
South Africa maintain their unbeaten record in the Titan Cup, as
they beat Australia by 2 wickets in game 5.
24th October
In the 2nd Pakistan-Zimbabwe test, Hasan Raza makes his debut
as the youngest Test cricketer ever, at 14 years, 238 days,
beating the previous mark of 15 yrs, 124 days, set by Mushtaq
Mohammed v the West Indies in 1959.
On the first day, Wasim Akram takes 6-48 as Zimbabwe make only 133,
Andy Flower top-scoring with 61.
23rd October
A century by Cullinan helps set India an insurmountable
target as South Africa beat India in the 4th Titan Cup match.
22nd October
Western Australia keeper Adam Gilchrist joins the Australian
squad in India, as a replacement for the injured Healy.
21st October
Zimbabwe hang on for a draw against a Pakistan side fired up on
the back of Wasim Akram's record breaking 257* in the First
Test.
In the Titan Cup, Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble put on 52 in
an unbroken 9th wicket partnership as India beat Australia by 2
wickets in a thriller!
20th October
Wasim Akram breaks the previous Test record for most sixes in an
innings as he hits 12 whilst making an unbeaten 257*. He also,
with Saqlain Mushtaq, breaks the Test 8th wicket record, as they
put on 313 in the first Pakistan- Zimbabwe test.
Trindad and Tobago win the Shell-Sandals one day trophy, beating
Guyana in the final.
19th October
Gary Kirsten wins a second MoM award, as his 105* leads South
Africa to a comfortable 7 wickets win over Australia in the
Titan Cup.
In thefirst Pakistan- Zimbabwe test, Wasim Akram (144*) and
Saqlain Mushtaq (37*) bat most of the day, to pass Zimbabwe's
total by the close
18th October
In thefirst Pakistan- Zimbabwe test, Zimbabwe are in a strong
position, as Pakistan are reduced to 189/6, facing a Zimbabwe
total of 375 (G Flower 110, P Strang 106*).
17th October
India lose to South Africa in the first Titan Cup game.
Man-of-the match Kirsten makes 84 as South Africa win by 47
runs.
In the first Pakistan- Zimbabwe test, Zimbabwe are 240/6, with
Grant Flower unbeaten on 98.
14th October
Zimbabwe draw their first match of their tour of Pakistan, failing to take
the last wicket to beat the Board XI. A last wicket partnership of 68
between Mohammad Hussain (58*) and Mohammad Zahid foils the tourists.
13th October
India beat Australia by 7 wickets in the only Test of of the Australian
tour. Kumble takes 5-67 (9 wickets in the match), and India lose 3 wickets
in reaching a target of only 58.
12th October
Day 3 of the India-Australia test finishes with India in
a commanding position. India, dismissed for 361, reduce
Australia to 168/6 (Kumble 3/42). Mongia finishes with 152,
and has a stumping and a catch in Australia's 2nd innings.
Former West Indies test player Keith Boyce collapses and dies
on his 53rd birthday.
Zimbabwe former captains Houghton and Flower make centuries
in their first tour game against a Pakistan Board XI.
11th October
N Mongia bats through day 2 of the India-Australia test, finishing the
day on 137*, India reaching 319-6.
10th October
In the only test of the tour Australia are dismissed for 182 (Kumble 4-63). In reply India are 57-1.
8th October
Auckland have signed Aravinda de Silva, the Sri Lankan cricketer,
to play for them in the New Zealand Domestics this season.
7th October
Australians drew with the Indian Board President's XI in the rain
curtailed 3 day tour match at Patiala today. Mark Waugh, bowling
his offbreaks picked up 6 for 68 while the sole resistance came
from Pankaj Dharmani who scored an unbeaten 130 off 170 balls
with 22 fours and a six.
Yorkshire announce that they will be leaving Headingley
for a new site near Wakefield by the year 2000.
6th October
Indian selectors dropped Manjrekar, Kambli and Jadeja from the
squad for the one-off Test against Australia starting from
October 10th. The only new face in the squad is VVS Laxman. The
complete squad is: *SR Tendulkar, V Rathour, +NR Mongia,
SC Ganguly, MA Azharuddin, R Dravid, VVS Laxman, SB Joshi,
AR Kapoor, A Kumble, J Srinath, BKV Prasad, DJ Johnson and
ND Hirwani.
South Africa won the Kenya Cricket Association Centenary Cup
beating Pakistan by 7 wickets in the Finals. Gary Kirsten scored
an unbeaten century, his 6th in ODIs, to guide South Africa to
victory, and won the man of the match award. Allan Donald, who
picked up 3-32 won the man of the tournament award. Scores:
Pakistan 203 all out in 46.2 overs, South Africa 204/3 in 39.2
overs.
In the 2nd day of the tour match against the Indian Board
President's XI, Australia declared their first innings at 358/8,
with Bevan scoring 100 not out. Karnataka's new ball bowler
Ganesh picked up 5 wickets for 103 runs. In reply the Board XI
had scored 85/2 at the end of the day.
5th October
Australians started their first day of cricket in India in a
rain curtailed first day of the tour first class game against
the Board President's XI. Overnight rain and wet outfield
prevented play in the first two sessions. Play commenced in the
third session with Australians reaching 122 for the loss of Mark
Taylor's wicket. Slater on 52 and Ponting on 45 were the not out
batsmen at the crease.
Brian Strang and Paul Strang of Mashonaland pick up all the 10
wickets to fall in the Matabeleland innings in the first round
of the Inter Provincial first class match in Zimbabwe, on
Friday, 4th October. This is the first such instance.
4th October
The Centenary Cup sees a thrilling game with world records
broken, and Pakistan qualifying for the final against South
Africa by the slimmest of margins. Shahid Afridi and Saeed Anwar
make centuries in Pakistan's total of 371. Shahid Afridi (man of
the match), in his first International innings, ties the records
for most sixes (11), and breaks the record for fastest century
(37 balls). Afridi also scored his 50 from 18 balls, the record
for which is held by ST Jayasuriya, made in 17 balls. This is
also Saeed Anwar's 9th ODI century, and along with Ramiz Raja,
Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar, has the maximum number of
centuries in ODIs for an active batsman.
Sri Lanka need 290 to make the final based on run rate
differential, but are reduced to 27-4 by Waqar Younis. A fine
recovery is led by Aravinda de Silva (122, his 7th century in
ODIs), Ranatunga (52), and Dharmasena (51), but Saqlain Mushtaq
(4-33) leaves Sri Lanka needing 11 from the last over with only
one wicket in hand. Vaas hits the first ball for 6, the 4th for
4, and is yorked by Waqar Younis with the 5th, leaving Sri Lanka
the losers by 82 runs, but more importantly one run short of the
290 required for them to advance on run rate differential.
3rd October
Kenya collapse against Alan Donald (6-23) as they attempt to
overtake a stiff target of 305 set by South Africa. South Africa
win by 202 runs, to confirm a place in Sunday's final. Their
opponent will be determined by the Pak-SL game, with Pakistan
needing to win by a large margin to reach the final.
2nd October
Pakistan survive a scare against Kenya to win their Centenary
tornament game by 4 wickets. The Kenyans recover well from a
poor start (62-7) with a partnership between opener Chudasama
(51) and man-of-the-match Thomas Odoyo (32) to finish with 148.
Pakistan falter in reply, losing their 6th wicket on 61, but a
half century by Mohin Khan secures the victory. Odoyo (18 years
old) takes 3-25 from his 10 overs.
1st October
In the much anticipated battle between the two top ODI teams Sri
Lanka come out on top after a close game. Both teams struggle in
a difficult wicket. South Africa make 169 (Cullinan 51,
Mulitharan 4-35), and following an intital flurry by man of the
match Jayasuria (45 off 30 balls), Sri lanka srape home with 2
wickets remaining.
The India senior team wins the Challenger Trophy, beating
India-B in the final. Tendulkar makes 133 in a comfortable 7
wicket win.
