Trivia #21: 500 agg. runs in a Test series without a ton (Aug93)

Based on all Tests upto and including Australia v Sri Lanka at Adelaide 25/01/1996

There have been 4 instances of players scoring 500+ in a series without scoring a century.

1) Clem Hill in the 1901-02 series for Aus Vs Eng. 5 tests, 10 innings, 0 Not outs, 521 runs, highest 99, Ave. 52.10 BTW he scored 99, 98, and 97 in consecutive innings.

2) Conrad Hunte in the 1964-65 series fo WI Vs Aus. 5 tests, 10 Innings, 1 Not out, 550 runs, highest 89, Ave. 61.11. His scores were 41 & 81, 89 & 53, 31 & 38, 75 & 81, 1 & 60*

3) Michael Atherton 1993 series for Eng Vs Aus 6 tests, 12 Innings, 0 Not outs, 553 runs, highest 99, Ave. 46.08

4) Graham Thorpe in the 1995 series for Eng v WI, 6 Tests, 12 innings, 0 Not outs, 506 runs, highest 94, Ave 42.16

Between 475 and 500:

In 1963, Kanhai scored 497 runs for WI vs Eng, without a century. 5 tests, 10 Innings, 1 NO, 497 runs, Highest 92, Ave. 55.22

In 1962-63, Ted Dexter scored 481 in the ashes series. 5 tests, 10 Innings, 0 NO, 481 runs, Highest 99, Ave. 48.10.

In 1977-78, G.R.Vishwanath scored 479 Vs Aus (highest score:83).

Just for the record, Hanif Mohammed is the only player to score 600+ in a series, with only one three-figure knock. This happened Vs WI in 1957-58. 5 tests, 9 Innings, 0 NO, 628 runs, Highest 337, Ave. 69.77.
