For the first time this season the first skipper Jim Pearson won the toss and elected to field. The one snag was that the opening bowler Jeff Charleston had not yet arrived at the ground. So it was with 10 Mullion men that took to the field. Eventually Charleston arrived saying he was not feeling well with a cold but that he could not pull out of the fixture that late. He had laid down on the sofa to watch the South Africa v New Zealand Test match, had fallen asleep, and not woken up till 30 minutes before the start. He received no sympathy at all.
Fielding on the large Mt Ambrose ground can always be a challenge but Mullion worked hard and threw accurately, keeping the runs at bay. After the 48 overs, Mt Ambrose had 158 for 8. Top wicket taker went to Mark Griffiths with 3 for 33 while top scorer was J Simmonds made 41 before he was run out by a direct hit from the wicketkeeper (who actually kept his gloves on throwing more in hope - he claimed it was all planned, but really was more the brown ale moment of the match than the Champagne).
After tea it did not take Mullion openers Trevor Lee and Kevin Bosustow long to get into the runs against what was a weak bowling attack. Between them they took only 25 overs to win the match; Trevor with 87 and Kevin on 59 as Mullion ended with 159 for 0.
Meanwhile at Mullion, the seconds batted first against Botallack and only managed 119 all out. However this alone was a minor victory as it is the first time this season that they have exceeded 100 runs. At the rate that they are going they are confident of an innings of over 300 runs by September. Although most of them managed double figures, the top scorer honour went to Ian (Nursey) Mailes with 24.
With such a small target, Botallack must have taken the bat with confidence. But cometh the hour, cometh the man and in this case it was Mullion's Gary Tremayne. With an impressive session of bowling, Gary ended up with 7 for 30 as Botallack were bowled out for 99 in 33 overs. Not much competition for the Cockspur Rum Man of the Match award.
