Vanuatu SEPSSA Primary School Competition

19-Aug-2005
Introduction
This year 2005 `SEPSSA' Games is significant for junior cricket in Vila especially kids in primary schools geared up for the games. SEPSSA (South Efate Primary Schools Sports Association) Games Super 8's Cricket is made of schools around Efate. The tournament had been played for the last 3 years and there are quiet a number of schools competing in the tournament. The number of participating schools has increased as well as the competition itself gets stronger each year especially when new schools enter the tournament.
Participation
23 schools played in the `SEPSSA' Games in 4 pools of 6. (Draw attached) Competition between schools is very competitive compared to the last 3 years or so. Few of the schools had to travel 15 - 25 km every week to play while others only need to walk to play.
Sponsorship
Sports Power has played an important role in sponsoring the 2005 `SEPSSA' Games super 8's cricket tournament. David and Annette Young have been generous to sponsor the tournament. We have learnt that they have moved to Adelaide, Australia this year. Vanuatu Cricket Association acknowledges their support in the development of junior cricket in Vanuatu and wished them all the best in the future.
Positive factors
* The number of schools participating in the `SEPSSA' tournament continues to increase and the competition is attracting the parents to come and watch the finals played
* Competition between schools is competitive compared to the last 3 years
* There were a number of individual performances. A few of the kids have the talent to play good cricket. Vila East school boys retain their win by defeating Pango English and Anambrou defeated Vile East in the girls grand final.(Finals results is attached)
* Primary schools teachers assistance in umpiring and arrangements of school teams turning up each week for the games continues to impress us
Negative factors
*`SEPSSA Games committee hasn't done much in regards to the game itself. It has come to my attention that they are sitting back and relax while we (and the teachers) do all the work.
*Some schools don't show up on match days and that really affects the program and it is a waste of time for some schools after spending so much money on bus fares shows up while others failed to turn up on match days. It is very important that they notify us as well as the games committee if they are not available to play
Acknowledgment
Teachers have played an important role by giving in their time and effort for helping out in the games. They are invaluable volunteers for cricket in Vanuatu. Without them the tournament won't be a success. Finally thanks to the `SEPSSA' Games committee and PEO for Shefa Province for their initiative to play cricket in term 1.
